Timpanogos Cave

"Captivating Canyon Caves"

We had the opportunity to go with my family to Timpanogos Cave yesterday. It was an amazing experience, and I am happy that we were able to do it with two small boys, and with me approaching the seventh month in my pregnancy. The only way to reach the cave entrance is to hike up a strenuous 1 1/2 mile trail which rises 1,092 feet. The trail was paved and proved to be a good, hard hike. I was so proud of how my little family was able to climb the mountain trail. We started two hours before our cave tour time so that we would have plenty of time to reach the top. Stan could have done it in half the time, but I am grateful he suggested that we start so early because I needed the full two hours. Gregory who is now five years old was able to hike to the top, through the cave, and reach the bottom all on his own. He did very well. George, two and a half years old, did very well as he walked up 3/4th on his own. At that point he told Stan and I that he needed to use the bathroom, so Stan put him on his shoulders and rushed up the steep trail. Gregory stayed with me, and at times would hold my hand and try to drag me up a little faster.

My parents and siblings started long after us, and at this point caught up with us. We finished together and made it in time for our cave tour.



We made it to the top. Elevation 6,730 feet.

Inside the cave!

Inside the cave was simply magical. It was so fascinating to witness the different caves, their beauty, and hear about the stories of how each was first discovered many years ago. We were very lucky because the weather worked in our favor. On the climb up it was partly cloudy but soon became overcast. While we were in the cave it apparently rained, hailed, and there was enough lightning that the rangers discouraged many hikers from continuing the hike up. However, by the time we had finished our tour of the cave, the rain had stopped and the weather was perfect and cool. It made for a great hike down and we were able to completed the 3.5 mile round trip hike.

Overall, we all had a great time, and I can't wait to come back to Timpanogos Cave.

Here is some helpful information if anyone is interested in learning more. "The round-trip hike and tour of the cave system takes about three hours. Mid-summer temperatures on the trail can reach 100 degrees F. However, temperatures in the caves average 45 degrees, so a sweater or light jacket is recommended. Hiking shoes, water, flashlights and sunscreen will make your visit safe and enjoyable." -http://www.nps.gov/tica/index.htm
